And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple

Luke 14:25-27

Luke 14:25-27
25
Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,
26
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
27
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

  1. By comparison to our love for Jesus, how are we to view our family?
    • Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
  2. If we do not hate our own life, what can we not be?
    • Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
  3. To be His disciple, what are we required to bear?
    • Luke 14:27 "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Luke 14:28-33

Luke 14:28-33
28
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
29
Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
30
saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
31
Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
32
And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
33
So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

  1. Before starting to build something expensive, what should a person do?
    • Luke 14:28 "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it;
  2. If a person starts to build and runs out of money, what will people do?
    • Luke 14:29-30 "lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, "saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'
  3. Before going to battle, what does a wise king consider?
    • Luke 14:31 "Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
  4. If a king knows he can't win, what will he do?
    • Luke 14:32 "Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
    • SO WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER, BEFORE DECIDING TO BE A DISCIPLE OF JESUS?
